A Balanced Life for the Working Woman?

By Rachel Johnston

Whoever started the myth that "leading a balanced life is possible" should be tarred and feathered! Do I sound too harsh?

Balance has come to imply that we must "do it all" — with a more balanced approach. Christian women are expected to "do it all" with patience, peace of mind and a gracious smile.

God’s Word indicates that balance means prioritization. When Jesus came to earth, the needs were overwhelming, but He did not fix everything and heal everyone. Instead He attended to His Father’s priorities. Regarding daily necessities, Jesus says, "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33, NIV).

As a wife and a full-time working mother of three boys, I encounter many times where the needs seem overwhelming and the daily necessities of life endless. I’ve come to realize there is pressure to view "wants" as needs and "choices" as necessities for success.

I am often asked, "How do you do it all?"

My reply is "I don’t."

Oswald Chambers suggests that the our enemy is not always bad things, but in fact all the good things that fill our lives and distract us from God’s best.

How can we be full of God’s best for our lives? After years of experimenting I’ve come to embrace the concept of focusing on priorities rather than balance.
